El Hacho

Length: 5km 🔁

Estimated time: 2hr

Difficulty: Easy

Starting point: Montejaque Water Trough

Summary

A lovely little adventure with one steady climb, big open views, and a good chance of spotting vultures circling overhead. It’s a rewarding, easy-going walk around El Hacho, with the option to turn it into something wilder by heading up to the summit.

The walk

Getting to the starting point:

You will need to drive to Montejaque. Drive out of Benaoján station, passing through Benaoján to arrive at Montejaque and a three-way junction in the road. Take the road signed towards Algodonales and Sevilla. Park on the roadside 50 metres up the hill, near the water trough.

  • With the water trough on your right, follow the concrete road between the houses back towards the village centre.
  • After about 300 m, take the road on the right, climbing uphill past the information sign for Llanos de Líbar.
  • Continue for about 750 metres, passing the El Pilar gates and the little shelter called Marina D’or. Just after the shelter, take the track on the right before the second set of El Pilar gates.
  • Follow this clear track uphill with El Hacho on your right. As you climb, look out for Griffon Vultures overhead. Bonelli’s Eagles also nest in the area.
  • Reach the saddle, where you’ll get views into the next valley.
  • For an extra challenge, you can head up to the summit of El Hacho from here. It takes about an hour each way and is especially beautiful at sunrise.
  • Otherwise, continue straight ahead through the saddle on the vehicle track and pass through the gate. Just after the gate, bear right towards the olive groves.
  • After 50 metres, bear right again opposite the shed on your left. Pick your way through the olive groves, following any visible vehicle tracks.
  • Head towards the knoll with trees on its sides, keeping the mountain on your right. Cross the chain across the path.
  • Go through the gate that looks locked, making sure to close it behind you. Continue on the track past the white building on your right.
  • Follow the main path as it winds down to the valley floor. After another ten minutes or so, pass another chain across the track and join the wider main track through the valley.
  • Turn right, keeping the mountain on your right as always. When you reach the tarmac road, turn right again.
  • Your car should be about 200 metres ahead.
