El Hacho

Length: 10km

Estimated time: 4hr

Difficulty: Hard

Rising to 1,011 metres above the white village of Gaucín, this dramatic double-peaked mountain delivers a scenic trek that doubles as a seriously decent workout – ideal for balancing out tapas and a glass (or two) of Albariño.

The walk breaks neatly into thirds. The first section eases you in with a straightforward climb on a clear mountain path, giving you time to find your rhythm. The second third starts to dial things up: more elevation, looser ground, and a trail that demands a bit more attention. Then comes the final push. While there’s no dramatic drop-off, a stumble could leave you sliding into thorny vegetation, so concentration is key!

The reward? Views that just keep getting better. Gaucín drops away beneath you, with rolling valleys and layered mountains stretching into the distance. At the top, you’ll find a summit register tucked into the southern peak and a geodetic marker on the northern one – small details that make the achievement feel official.

It’s quiet up here. On a good day, you might only share it with a handful of other hikers. Linger, breathe it in, and enjoy the peace!
